Do's and Don'ts for your final week of prep
The "Peak Week" is the most misunderstood and highly debated phase in bodybuilding. It is crucial to understand one absolute rule before exploring the science: Peak week is not for losing fat. If a competitor is not already stage-lean (under 8% body fat for men, under 14% for women) by day seven, no amount of peak week manipulation will save them.
The sole objective of peak week is an illusion of fluid dynamics: shifting water out from underneath the skin (extracellular fluid) and driving it into the muscle cells (intracellular fluid). This creates the ultimate "dry" and "full" look.
Here is the science and the sequential process of how bodybuilders manipulate their physiology in the final 7 days.
The Science of Fluid Dynamics
To understand the protocol, you must understand the three biological levers being pulled: Carbohydrates, Water, and Sodium.

Carbohydrates (Glycogen Supercompensation): When you consume carbohydrates, they are converted into glycogen and stored in your muscle tissue for energy. For every 1 gram of glycogen stored in the muscle, it pulls approximately 2.7 to 3 grams of water into the cell with it. Therefore, to make a muscle look huge and full, it must be loaded with glycogen and water.

Water & Aldosterone: The body is constantly striving for homeostasis (balance). If you dramatically restrict water, your adrenal glands release a hormone called aldosterone, which signals the kidneys to retain water and sodium, causing you to look soft and bloated. To trick the body into flushing water, competitors do the opposite: they hyper-hydrate.

Sodium: Sodium pulls water into the bloodstream and helps facilitate the transport of glucose (carbs) into the muscle cell. A classic, outdated bodybuilding mistake is cutting sodium completely. Without sodium, carbohydrates cannot be effectively shuttled into the muscle, leaving the competitor looking "flat" (deflated) and risking severe muscle cramps on stage.
The Peak Week Protocol: A Step-by-Step Sequence
While every coach has their own specific formula, the standard evidence-based peak week follows a "Depletion" followed by a "Loading" phase.
Phase 1: The Depletion Phase (Days 7 to 4 Out)
The goal here is to empty the muscles of glycogen so they act like dry sponges, ready to absorb massive amounts of carbohydrates later in the week.

Carbohydrates: Dropped extremely low (often 0 to 50 grams per day). Training becomes brutally exhausting.

Water: Hyper-hydration begins. The competitor drinks a massive amount of water (typically 6 to 8+ liters or 1.5 to 2 gallons a day). This suppresses aldosterone production, essentially turning the body into a diuretic flushing machine.

Sodium: Kept relatively high or at normal dietary levels to ensure the body does not panic and trigger water retention mechanisms.

Training: High-volume, moderate-weight circuits designed to burn through any remaining muscle glycogen stores.
Phase 2: The Loading Phase (Days 3 to 1 Out)
This is where the magic happens. The "dry sponges" are filled.

Carbohydrates: Carbs are drastically increased ("carb loading"). Because the muscles are completely depleted, they supercompensate, absorbing far more glycogen than they normally could. Intake might jump to 400, 600, or even 800+ grams of carbs per day depending on the competitor's size.

Water: Because the body is still flushing water rapidly from the hyper-hydration phase, the water needed to store the incoming carbohydrates is pulled directly from the extracellular fluid (under the skin). Water intake is usually tapered down as the show approaches (e.g., cut to 3 liters, then 1.5 liters).

Sodium: Tapered slightly but never eliminated. Consistent sodium ensures blood pressure remains high enough to achieve vascularity (veins popping) and muscle pumps.

Training: Resistance training stops completely. You cannot afford to burn the glycogen you are desperately trying to store. Competitors only practice their posing.
Phase 3: Show Day Execution
By the morning of the show, the biological trap has been sprung. The muscles are full of glycogen, the skin is tight, and aldosterone hasn't had time to rebound yet.

Meals: Small, frequent meals consisting of easily digestible carbs (rice cakes, honey, jam) and a little fat (peanut butter) to slow digestion and keep blood sugar stable. Protein is kept low to avoid digestive distress.

Water: Sips only. Just enough to swallow food and keep the mouth from going completely dry.

The "Pump Up": 20 minutes before walking on stage, competitors use resistance bands or light dumbbells to pump blood into the muscles. Because of the high glycogen and strategic sodium, the muscles swell rapidly, pressing hard against the paper-thin skin.
The Danger of Peak Week
Peak week is an extreme, highly stressful state of controlled dehydration and metabolic manipulation. If a competitor misjudges their carb load by even a few hours, or cuts water too aggressively, they can "spill over" (carbs and water pool under the skin, destroying muscle definition) or end up completely flat and stringy.
This is why modern sports science advocates for bringing a competitor into a show completely ready two weeks before the stage date. If you are already perfect, you don't need a drastic, risky peak week—you just maintain your course and let your hard work speak for itself.
